If you’ve been on social media at all over the last 6 months, I guarantee you’ve seen a lot of memes, posts, and stories about Enneagram Types. That phrase seems to be a buzz word for a lot of people right now. For me, I was first interested in the Enneagram after seeing a post about Type 4’s on Instagram. I had no clue what it meant but as soon as I saw one post, it’s like I couldn’t escape it. My church even did an entire Enneagram Series! As a mental health professional, I LOVE personality tests and I’m very guilty of taking Buzzfeed quizzes on the regular as well. But the Enneagram is a whole new ball game.
The Enneagram is the “newest”, pop-psychology personality test. I say “newest” because the Enneagram has been around for practically forever, due to it being created by spiritual leaders in a church back in the day. If any of you are familiar with any other famous personality tests, such as the Meyers-Briggs (INFJ’s where ya at?!) and the True Colors Test (shout out to my Blues), the Enneagram goes above and beyond what these can offer. The Myers-Briggs focuses more on how our personalities influence our decision making while the True Colors Test gives us insight into our learning styles and demeanors. The Enneagram, however, educates us on our intrinsic motivations, desires, passion, ego, fears, and God-given gifts. Crazy, right? But for me and a lot of others, it’s scary accurate.
The Enneagram is essentially 9 numbers that each have a specific title. If you look at the Enneagram Model, you’ll notice a bunch of lines. Those lines show stressors and points of growth for each personality type. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be breaking down each personality type in the Enneagram to give you more info. But until then, I encourage you to take the test for yourself! I personally love The Enneagram Coach (you enter your email to get your results but you can opt out of receiving other emails from them). To me, this website is the most accurate and it's free! There are also a lot of cool podcasts out there such as “Enneagrams for Dummies”.
Here’s a quick intro for all of the types:
1’s: The Reformer
2’s: The Helper
3’s: The Achiever
4’s: The Individualist
5’s: The Investigator
6’s: The Loyalist
7’s: The Enthusiast
8’s: The Challenger
9’s: The Peacemaker
My future articles about this topic will cover everything from individual types, wings, mistypes, and whatever else I find interesting to share so stay tuned!
xoxo,
Beth
